ACF opened the "SHIZO" art object in Berlin - a replica of the punishment cell in which Alexei Navalny is being held

January 24, 2023

The "SHIZO" art object was opened in Berlin. It is a cold concrete cage, 2.5 by 3 meters in size, which is a replica of a punishment cell, nicknamed SHIZO, which is used in Russian prisons. It is the most severe punishment in the Russian penitentiary system. Alexei Navalny is being held in a similar cage continuously. Since August, he has been placed in the SHIZO ten times already. In total, he has spent 105 days there. Each time they put him there on trumped-up, absurd pretexts: for example, for washing his face half an hour earlier than scheduled.

Detention in the SHIZO is pure torture, applied to Navalny on direct orders from Vladimir Putin, who has already tried to kill him.

The author of this art object, Oleg Navalny, is Alexei's brother. Oleg spent 3.5 years in prison on trumped-up charges. During this time, Oleg was thrown into a punishment cell at least 7 times, so he knows well what it's like there.

"SHIZO" is part of the Free Navalny international political campaign. Alexei often talks about the torturous conditions of the punishment cell, and we have talked about it in numerous interviews and at meetings with politicians. But now, in Berlin, you can not only see it, but also go inside this cage, sit there, and experience a fraction of what Alexei is going through.

The purpose of this event is to tell the world about the conditions of Alexei's detention and achieve freedom for Putin's main enemy. This can be done if as many people as possible around the world join us in our efforts. "SHIZO" will be standing in Berlin for a few more weeks. Come by, take photos, post them on social media, and write about Alexei with the hashtag #FreeNavalny
