Yulia Navalnaya has announced the launch of the Alexei Navalny Award, which will recognize young politicians leading the most impactful grassroots initiatives. The award will be presented annually on Alexei’s birthday, with the first ceremony set to take place this year.
Navalnaya made the announcement on February 16—the day of Alexei Navalny’s murder—during a memorial event at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin.
On that day, remembrance events were held across Russia and around the world. In Moscow, nearly five thousand people gathered at Borisovskoye Cemetery to lay flowers on Alexei’s grave.
His parents, Lyudmila and Anatoly Navalny, also visited the cemetery, along with Yulia Navalnaya’s mother, Alla Abrosimova. Despite the cold, the line of mourners stretched for hundreds of meters, far beyond the cemetery gates. In cities across Russia, people left flowers, candles, and handwritten notes at memorials to victims of political repression.
